Description:
India, 19th c.22,5 × 18,5 cm
Sheet from a manuscript of several pages. Watercolours with gold highlights. Thin smoothed paper, the reverse, unusually written in six columns in fine nastaliq. A princess seated on a rich assortment of richly embroidered cushions and carpets, accompanied by two young women. These are also crowned with a small diadem with peacock fronds, perhaps they are the younger sisters. On the left edge of the picture are two figures, one, apparently a wise man or doctor with a powerful white turban and long beard accompanied by an ascetic with henna-dyed curly hair. The foreground is bordered by pink rocks. Above the terrace several colourfully patterned sails and sun canopies, on the left an equally rich fabric tent. It can be assumed that a story with several illustrations was told and illustrated in this manuscript - night scene with five women on a terrace playing a board game with an inscription in a reserve.
South German Priate Collection, acquired in Garmisch 1997, the left side of the miniature is creased and damaged at the binding, trimmed - Minor wear, mounted
