Magu was a Chinese Daoist fairy who lived in the mountains and was accompanied by the Stag of Longevity. She is said to have been the sister of an adept of Daoism in the Han Dynasty and to have become immortal herself after studying Daoism. She is very popular in China and many temples and mountains are dedicated to her. She lives in the wild nature, wears clothes made of leaves and grass and often carries a staff with peaches of longevity. Sometimes she is also accompanied by a tiger, as in this pair of paintings. This type of painting is often used as a birthday gift for a person of old age, to express the wish for longevity. Enclosed is the handwritten expert opinion of Kano Seisen'in Osanobu (1796-1846) on the authenticity and attributes the two hanging scrolls to the Chinese painter of beautiful ladies Tang Yin (1470-1523) - Silk partly dam., part. rest.
