Ink Bamboo. Framed Under Glass, ink on paper. Inscription and signature by the artist: “The spirit of [Su] Dongpo. Youhe.” Four seals of the artist: “Youhe changshou”, “Zeng Youhe yin”, “Guangshan Zeng Zhaohe Youhe shuhua yin”, “Qinghua beng jia”.
From a European private collection, acquired prior to 1960
Tseng Yu-ho (Betty Ecke) was a painter and art historian. She studied at the Furen University in Peking Chinese painting with Pu Jin (1880-1966) and Pu Quan (1913-1991) and western art history with Gustav Ecke (1896-1971). The latter she married in 1945. 1949 she went to Honolulu and became professor for Chinese Art History at the University of Hawaii from 1973 to 1986. In her Chinese painting she mixed traditional and modern elements and created an individual abstract style. She also experimented with different kinds of paper - Part. slightly wear, minor water stains
