Description:

Tibet, 19th/ 20th c.
H. 45 cm
The shrine is in the shape of a pointed arch with two constrictions, and is based on a lotus, with partially gilded leaves pointing upwards. Two wing doors made of lattice, decorated with small flowers, and opening inwards, conceal the intended contents. The elaborately chased frame shows the allegorical animals, symbolic of the virtues (paramitas) of a world ruler, related to the meaning of the deity figure hidden behind. From top to bottom follow Garuda, then in pairs on the left and right, Nagas, sea monster (Makara), billy goat with dwarf, lion and elephant. The shrine stands on an altar-like stepped base, the edges of which are decorated with punched gold ornaments. The visible surfaces are appliquéd with the symbols of the eight immeasurable signs of good fortune, and a set turquoise in the centre.
Old German private collection, acquired between 1960 and 1995 - Very minor damages due to age
