Bell: silver; shaft: red sandalwood; silver rings, alternately set with turquoise and coral; fire-gilt fittings, silver chain. Such wind instruments, in the manner of shawms mostly of Asian origin, are always played in pairs. This ensures a continuum of tones, in the sense of permanent breathing. Their sound is loud and sharp, intended to summon deities, but these instruments are also used in welcoming ceremonies for high personalities and delegations, and in religious processions. Gyaling are usually accompanied by long horns and other sounding bodies, as well as stick drums, cymbals and cymbals.
Important southern German private collection, acquired at Schoettle Ostasiatica before 2000 - Traces of age
