Description:

Tibet, 19th/ 20th c.

This stick drum is indispensable in the "orchestra" of Tibetan sacred music. It is usually present in several copies, depending on the scope and significance of the ritual, and the size of the orchestra. It functions as a beat generator for recitations, but also for the background music of ritual music, which usually serves to summon and worship the deities. The drum consists of a round drum body with a humped rim, carved with ornaments, dragon motifs and polychrome painted with flower bouquets and lucky clouds. The staff is in the form of a flower stem, with one segment emerging from the lower one in succession, thickening into a flower, forming a stylised vajra, and ending at the upper end in a flower that supports the drum body. The lower end of the staff is formed by a carved fivefold vajra. The drum is covered on both sides with green-dyed leather skins, the edges of which are decorated with a surrounding meandering band. The original drumstick is fortunately present. This ritual drum is a very beautiful and well-preserved example.
