Description:

Tibet, the brocades 18th c., the bottle 19th c.
L. 36 cm
The brocade bag conceals a small copper vial with an elaborately crafted silver mouthpiece with gilded ornaments visible outside. The water in the vial enables the mouth to be moistened after long recitations, and on the other hand, the liquid is supposed to cleanse the mouth before sacred formulas are recited. The bag is worn visibly over the front of the robe and has increasingly become a status symbol of the wearer, depending on its texture and patterning. Brocade, silver and gilding.
From an old and important German private collection, collected between 1950 and 1987, collection number V 93 - Traces of age
