These sixteen ritual cards are probably taken from a larger thematic series. Ritual cards are used on the occasion of initiation rituals where sadhanas - visualisation instructions - are read aloud. When a particular deity is invoked from the text, the master of ceremonies shows the corresponding card to the initiates to memorise the representation. Usually the backs of these cards show the names of the deity depicted overleaf, and contain additional mantras or words of worship. Depending on the scope and content of the initiation, the quantity of such cards is more or less numerous. Unfortunately, the backs of the cards in this collection are covered (?) by the framing, so that the exact determination of the individual depictions is not possible. Tempera on cotton fabric, framed.
From an old Bavarian private collection, collected since the 1960s - Wear, traces of age
