Castiglione came to China as missionary in 1715 and served the Qing court as a painter until his death in 1766. The European illusionism of his paintings fascinated the Qianlong emperor and thus he patronized a hybrid style of painting incorporating Chinese and European traditions. Castiglione taught Chinese court painters European oil painting and the use of perspective and shading, so that some of them were quite able to do paintings in his style. The two album leaves here use in their landscape parts mostly the traditional Chinese style, but the horses reflect the naturalistic style of Castiglione quite well. Most interesting is the horse standing in the water and drinking. His snout and legs are mirrored on the water surface and show the illusionism of Castiglione - Minor signs of age, slightly werar
