Description:

China, Qing dynasty
122 x 44 / 137 x 59 cm R.
Framed under glass, ink and colors on silk. Lü Dongbin (ca. A.D. 750) was a scholar and recluse who learnt the secrets of Daoism from Zhongli Quan, the Chief of the Eight Immortals, and attained to immortality at the age of 50. His attributes are a fly-brush in his right hand and a sword slung across his back. With this sword of supernatural power he freed the earth of various forms of evil. The green demon in this painting, holding a white peony and a red pearl in his hand is seemingly trying to persuade the Daoist Immortal, but the sage is firmly turning away from him. The painting is done with opaque, bright colors and vigorous brushstrokes and reflects the spirits of the Immortal and the demon very well.
From a European private collection, acquired prior to 1960 - Traces of age
