The Two Ladies Wang Zhaojun and Cai Wenji. Two Paintings, framed under glass, ink and colors on silk. On each painting inscription and signature by the artist: “Lady Zhaojun Leaves through the Pass / Lady Wen Ji Returns Home to Han. Imitating the style of Lü Tingzhen (Lü Ji, active ca. 1475-1503), in the first month of the gengwu year (1870/1930) painted in the Zhibuzu Studio by Kou Zhenjiang.” Three seals of the painter: “Zhenjiang” etc.
From a European private collection, acquired prior to 1960
Wang Zhaojun was a palace lady of emperor Yuandi of the Han dynasty. In 33 B.C. she was given by the emperor to the King of the Huns and became his queen. Although the emperor wanted her to be returned back, she lived with the Huns until her death and was also buried there.
