Description:

Persia, ca. 16th c.
19 x 30 cm
Fine painting in polychrome gouache and gold on paper. The painting is in the style of Timurid book illumination of the 15th/16th century. The subject is also indebted to the ancient Persian tradition. It is a depiction of the king and prophet Solomon and the queen Sheba of Sheba "bilqis", a very popular episode, which can be traced back to the Persian epic Mantiq-al tair (The Language of the Birds) by Farid al-Din Attar. The elaborate figural scene is decorated in the margins with fine palmette work and curved lancet leaves. A cut-out in the box allows a view of the reverse side of the leaf, decorated with fine cloud band ornamentation and calligraphy. The graphic design of the leaf shows similarities with a Timurid miniature (15th century), which was auctioned at Christie's on 27.03.2023 lot 25.
