Description:
North India, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath, Gupta period, late 5th c.H. 40 cm o. S.
Standing with his right leg slightly bent on a rectangular base issued by a triangle-shaped pinnacle, both arms broken, his well-defined body showing a modest fold of flesh at hip level, wearing a diaphanous monastic garment including an underskirt secured around his hips and a mantle covering both shoulders, his face displaying a serene expression with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows running into the nose-bridge, smiling lips, elongated earlobes, his curled hairdo continuing into the ushnisha and behind his head a section of the aureole.
