Description:

Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak, Toba region
H. 118 / 187 cm
The archaic, mask-like "Singa" carved wooden symbol served as protection against negative influences, against black magic and ill-disposed villagers. The "Singa" is a mythological primeval creature that has an ominous effect. The specimen presented here is covered with rich curvilinear engraved decoration. The holes on the side were used to attach attached "wings". Expressive, authentic sculpture that has lost its original polychrome setting over the years.
Important Bavarian private collection, acquired before 2007
Cf. Sibeth, Achim, Batak, Lindenmuseum Stuttgart, (1990), pp. 115 - 125 - Partly corroded, minor damages due to age
