Buddha means the enlightened one, the awakened one. He worked as a founder of religion in 500 BC in the northern Near East. Kapilavastu is his birthplace. In the gazelle grove, in the area of Benares, the Buddha gave his first sermon. It contained the famous 'Four Noble Truths': The Noble Truth of Suffering; The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering; The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering; The Noble Truth of the Way to the Cessation of Suffering. From the path to the cessation of suffering resulted the teaching of the 'Eightfold Path': right belief, right thinking, right speaking, right doing, right living, right striving, right concentration, right immersion. This simple, noble sculpture shows Gautama Buddha in the state of his enlightenment, his right hand touching the earth in testimony, while the left, palms open, lies relaxed in his lap. His legs are crossed in the diamond posture, the soles of his feet pointing upwards. His base is the lunar disc, here depicted as a smooth surface lying above the hidden stamens of the double lotus. The beautiful smooth surface of the bronze testifies to its special appreciation through multiple touches. Bronze, copper inlays at the edges of the garment. The sculpture is still originally sealed, and is sealed by the double vajra on the plate.
