Description:

Tibet, ca. 17th/ 18th c.
H.46/ 48 cm
The snow lion with its turquoise mane is the heraldic animal of Tibet. But as a companion or as a mount he usually appears in pairs with many deities in the niches of their altars. He usually looks friendly, and in some representations plays with his paws with mani stones. The lion is attached to Buddha Shakyamuni as his symbol of rulership, which is expressed in his name Sakya sen-ge - "Lion of Sakya". Simhanada Avalokiteshvara is considered the "lion-voiced one", this expresses the superiority of the Buddha teachings he spreads. This pair of lions undoubtedly served as an application in the two niches of an altar dedicated to the great sculpture of a deity. Copper, chased and fire-gilded.
