Description:
China, around 1900L. 86 (101) cm, B. 75 cm
Outer fabric: silk satin (black blue), embroidery: silk thread (multicolored), satin stitch; gold and silver thread, thin silk cords, appliqué technique; tiny red beads (for the sun).
Lining fabric: silk, blue. Borders: Woven with metallic thread, plum blossoms on broken ice; Silk satin (black), gold and silver thread, appliqué technique (embroidery, peonies and lotus).
Fringed border: silk yarns, macramé. Vests of this type were part of the ceremonial dress of the ladies and show the rank badge of the husband, or the father in the case of unmarried daughters. They are also always decorated with dragons in clouds above waves. The rank insignia here shows a crane, which symbolizes the first civilian rank. The other rank birds are embroidered in colored silk between the golden dragons and clouds on the cape. Overall, the embroidery and the design are of a very high quality for the time of manufacture. The design, as well as the use of imported colors and the fact that the symbolic animal and the sun were appliquéd, suggest a late date for the vest.
