Description:

China, silver-inlaid two-character Shisou markt o base, 17th/ 18th c.
D. 12, h. 11,6 cm
The globular body is intricately embellished with silver inlay with a pair of taotie masks below a pair of upright handles. The base is is inlaid with a two-character maker's mark Shisou. Weight: 916 gr.
Collection Dr. Ulrich Lindenmann (1920 - 2018), Berlin, bought in the 1980s from Leo Spik in Berlin, sold by him at Nagel, 9.12.2014, lot 1119
The Ming period metal smith known as Shi Sou (old man Shi) was famous for specialising in the production of bronze objects with silver inlaid designs, and his style became the precedent for later wares, made from the 17th century and throughout the Qing dynasty. See a group of smaller scholar’s obejcts by signed by Shi Sou illustrated by Rose Kerr, ‚Later Chinese Bronzes‘, London 1990, pl. 50. Compare also with a similar decorated censer from the collection ‚Water Pine and Stone Retreat‘ by Hugh Moss, sold Sotheby’s Hongkong, 2.6.2016, lot 61. A very similar censer was sold at Christie’s Hongkong, 6.10.2015, lot 171 - Very minor traces of use
