AN ALTAR APRON WITH A LARGE DRAGON

Description:
South China, 19th c.97 x 101 cm
The silken background fabric is completely covered with embroidery: gold thread in appliqué technique, contours in black silk cords, details additionally adorned with applications of silver metal sheat (paktong) and black glass. Framing strips made of blue silk (worn). Suspension at the top and lining: cotton (light blue, turquoise). A large four-clawed dragon wrapped around a flaming pearl is filling the lower main section. The space is filled with connected clouds, waves at the bottom and rocks at the sides. In the upper section, two running dragons flank a large flaming pearl, which looks more like a sun above a stylized wave. The design of the dragon's head with metal applications is unusual.
