Yellow silk velvet (epinglé frisé), background darker yellow represented by cut open and pattern in lighter yellow by closed velvet loops. In an elaborate process, the motifs are meticulously cut by hand into the velvet. Lining: yellow silk. Plums, orchids, chrysanthemums and banana plants grow above perforated garden stones. The plants are a variation of the Four Talents of the Scholars, with the bamboo replaced by the banana. The surrounding border decorated with the flowers of the four seasons, namely chrysanthemums, bamboo, plums and peonies.
Max Müller (1867-1960), German consul in Hankow, collected in China between 1905 and 1912. By descent to his daughter Irmgard Müller-Doertenbach (1909-2011), acquired from her by the present owner in 1992
