Mountains and Streams without end. Miniature handscroll, ink on paper. Signature at the end of the scroll: „Respectfully painted by Your subject Fang Zong". One double-seal of the artist: „Fang",,Zong".
Old private collection, by repute bought in Japan in the 1950s, bought from this collection by the present owner
Fang Zong was a native of Zhejiang province and served as a court painter in the Qianlong period (1736-1795). He learned landscape painting with Zhang Zongcang (1686-1755), one of the favorite painters of the Qianlong Emperor. The paintings by Fang Zong too received the favor of the Emperor who personally wrote inscriptions onto them. In the National Palace Museum in Taipei there are kept eight hanging scrolls, one handscroll and three albums by Fang Zong from the Qianlong collection. This fine miniature handscroll shows the typical style of the literati painting in the tradition of Huang Gongwang (1269-1354), which was popular at the Qianlong court. It may possibly once have been part of one of the small miniature cabinets (duobaoge) of the Qianlong Emperor, in which all kinds of miniature art objects were kept like porcelain, bronze objects, jade and miniature scrolls with painting and calligraphy. A very nice work done with a fresh unrestrained brush and rich ink variation - Modern mounting, minor restorations the edges
