Description:
China, Qing dynasty153 x 73 cm, R.
Ink and color on silk, mounted on a wooden panel. Two figures wearing the garment of Song dynasty officials are depicted with their horses. One of them wears a blue gown with clouds and cranes, the other one a red robe with dragons between clouds. In the upper part of the painting, the two are seen again riding on their horses through the clouds towards a gate in the heaven. There they hand over scriptures to a boy attendant. They seemingly are messengers to the heavenly powers. Unfortunately the cartouche at the lower right corner of the painting is painted over with white color, so that the names of the figures are uncertain. Obviously the painting was an image for veneration in a temple, maybe a part of a greater composition.
Formerly a German private collection, acquired before 2000 - Minor wear, slight signs of age
