Landscape with Scholar looking at a Waterfall. Ink and colors on paper, mounted, framed and glazed. Signed: “In the Style of Zhang Dafeng (Zhang Daqian, 1899-1983), Haixia jushi Ying”. One seal of the artist: “Private seal of He Ying” (He Ying si yin).

He Haixia, original name He Ying, was a well known landscape painter from Peking. In 1927 he entered the National Academy of Arts (Guoli meishu xuexiao) and in 1934 became a student of Zhang Daqian. In 1946 he went with him to Chengdu in Sichuan, where he copied ancient paintings under his guidance. Later he was active at the Academy of Chinese Painting of Shenxi province (Shenxi sheng guohuayuan) in Xi’an, of which he became vice-president in 1983. His expressive landscape paintings in a typical blue-green style made him to one of the leading masters of the Chang’an school of Chinese painting (Chang’an huapai). This small scroll seems to be an early work of him - Minor creased, few foxing spots on the mount
