Su Renshan, personal name Changchun, was an eccentric genius painter from Shunde prefecture of Guangdong province. He was the son of an official and amateur painter and was intended to become an official too. But after failing the civil service examinations for three times he devoted his life to painting, his passion from early childhood. He developed a highly personal, linear style of landscapes and figures, with motifs often taken from woodblock-printed painting manuals. This painting is an example of an almost minimalistic style. The artist was largely forgotten and rediscovered only in the 1920s - Wear, traces of age
