China, 18th c.
D. 5,9 cm
A fine cast and chased, with remnants of black lacquer and parcel-gilt bronze miniature circular box and cover, supported on a low foot rim, the cover with a raised central gilded panel in form of six conjoined ruyi-heads and decorated with a low relief design of a bird perched in a flowering prunus tree on ring-punched ground. The interior all gilded.
German private collection, sold at Trudel Klefisch, Cologne, 10.6.2005, lot 469 - Several larger boxes of this form are illustrated in De Brujin ‚Sawasa Japanese Export Art in Black and Gold, 1650-1800, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, pp.107-110 for closely related boxes, where they are described as being ‚incense containers‘ and while this may so, it is worth to point out that all these boxes are considerably flatter in profile than the standard Chinese incense powder boxes.
