Description:
China, 18th/ 19th c.168 x 52 cm
Bluish light grey silk with patterns woven into dark red silk velvet. Cotton lining. As usual, the chair hanging is divided into four sections with a floral medallion surrounded by vines for the seat, a pair of opposite lions above waves for the front section. The back shows a seated qilin in the front and a fenghuang bird with a sun in the back. Framed by a border of lotus flowers with tendrils.
Max Müller (1867-1960), German consul in Hankow, collected in China between 1905 and 1912. By descent to his daughter Irmgard Müller-Doertenbach (1909-2011), acquired from her by the present owner in 1992
