Description:
China. 19th c.Je 114 x 67 cm
Red satin silk embroidered with dyed silk in satin stitches, gold and silver threads in appliqué technique. Lined with thin beige silk fabric. The rectangular hangings are each divided into a larger section containing a vase with flowers on a pedestal, next to various antiques such as incense burners, brush stands and seals. In the upper, narrower section, two lions face a large brocade ball between them. The embroidered frame border with fruits, flowers and bats.
Max Müller (1867-1960), German consul in Hankow, collected in China between 1905 and 1912. By descent to his daughter Irmgard Müller-Doertenbach (1909-2011), acquired from her by the present owner in 1992
