Description:
China, Daoguang to Tongzhi periodL. 143 cm, B. 206 cm.
Dark red satin silk embroidered with colored silk and gold threads. Six gilt bronze buttons. Lined with creamy white fur (probably ermine). The dark red of this silk was considered a shade of yellow in Qing Dynasty China and was reserved for high ranking individuals. Scattered among the golden dragons in clouds here are Shou medallions. This is often an indication of use for a birthday celebration. Typically, a gentleman's robe has high central slits.
Private collection, Frankfurt, acquired between 1956 and the 1980's in Hong Kong, sold Nagel, 12.11.1999, lot 1175 and acquired by the present owner
Precious fur-lined silk robes have survived rather rarely. They were not only an expression of luxury, but also referred to the origin of the Manchurians from the northwest of China. Compare a robe preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, a fur-lined women's robe, inv. no. 1973.28.6 - Very good condition
