Description:
China, Qianlong periodD. 41,5 cm
Of lobed form, deftly carved through thick layers of rich red lacquer, the domed cover with a hexagonal cartouche featuring a scene with immortals within a pavilion near a lake with servants.
From the collection of Dr Herbert J. Exner (1928-2023), collected from the 1960s to the mid-1990s
The present work belongs to a group of deeply carved cinnabar lacquer boxes and lids, which convey a three-dimensional visual effect and a sense of movement through precise knife work and masterful execution, and additional colours have been integrated. However, unlike other circular and four-lobed examples that are more commonly found in museum collections, the hexagonal shape is rare. Compare examples of four-lobed jars and lids as described in Lin Mun-lee, Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colours: Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, pp.121-123, nos.109-113 - Partially old varnished wear to rims, minim. age cracks and very slightly chipped
