Description:

Japan, Nagasaski, Meiji period
40,3 x 49,2 x 24,2 cm
In Nagasaki in the middle of the 19th century, small pieces of furniture such as tables and stands as well as boxes and trays were made of lacquer decorated with flowering branches and animals in very thin, iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay. This technique became known as Nagasaki aogai zaiku. Many pieces embellished in this manner were made for the Dutch and for export, but, as with a pipe holder in the Nagasaki City Museum or this present sword stand, they were also produced for the domestic market.
Assembled from an old German private collection since the 1950s - Few minor traces of age, minimally rest.
