Belisar (ca. 505-565), a famous general under Justinian, spent his life humiliated and in poverty in Constantinople after he has been falsely accused of high treason. In the art of the 17th and 18th century art, he is depicted as an old, blind beggar at the moment a young soldier recognises him.
