Yellow represents the earth element and the center of the four cardinal points. It has a balanced 'Yin- Yang' energy and is represented by the mythological chimera the Oilin. Because it was the dynastic colour of the last two Imperial dynasties, a large number of the courtly porcelains from both dynasties are glazed in yellow. At banquets, only the Emperor, his wife and the Empress dowager dined and drank from a full set of yellow-glazed tableware. In addition, yellow clothing was reserved for the imperial family and violations of this ordinance were severely punished.
