Export of Cultural Property

When exporting cultural property from the EU, the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (1993) and the UNESCO Convention of 1970 must be observed.
For the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, export permits are applied for through the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe.

Export from the EU

or works of art older than 50 years that exceed the following value thresholds, an export licence may be required:

Paintings
from € 150.000

Watercolours, gouaches, pastels
from € 30.000

Export from Germany WITHIN the EU

Since the entry into force of the German Cultural Property Protection Act (Kulturgutschutzgesetz – KGSG), export permits may also be required for exports to other EU Member States. The following thresholds are particularly relevant:

Paintings
older than 75 years and from € 300.000

Watercolours, gouaches, pastels
older than 75 years and from € 100.000
